Is there a right time for Couple Therapy?
Love through the Years
Every couple relationship has seasons. Some are full of excitement and new beginnings; others bring change, pressure or questions about what comes next. Couple therapy can help at any stage—not only when things are falling apart, but whenever a couple wants to understand each other better and find their way forward.
The early years: learning how to be “us”
The early years can be a joyful whirlwind: making a home, combining families, deciding about children, money, work and whose turn it is to load the dishwasher. But love doesn’t automatically teach us how to talk about hard things.
Couple therapy can help couples spot unhelpful patterns early, handle disagreements and manage conflict better and make room for both partners’ needs. Think of it as building good foundations while the house is still being built.
In 2025 4% of the individuals and couples who came to Accord for Couple Therapy came before they were married for 1 year. 26% came when they were between 1 and 10 years together, 32% came between 11 and 20 years together.
The middle years: when life gets busy and loud
Careers, parenting, caring for older relatives, health worries and everyday exhaustion can leave a couple feeling more like co-managers than partners. The conversations become all logistics: Who’s collecting? What’s for dinner? Did you ring the school?
Couple therapy can offer space to pause, reconnect and talk about what has been pushed aside. It can help couples share the load, work through resentment, rebuild closeness or face a major change together. 23% of those who came to Accord, came when they were between 21 and 30 years together and 8% when they were between 31 and 40 years together.
The later years: finding the next chapter
Grown-up children, retirement, bereavement, health changes or simply more time together can impact the satisfaction levels and dynamic of a relationship. Couples may be asking: What do we want now? How do we re connect/ become closer?
Couple therapy can help partners listen afresh, honour what they have been through and decide what they want the next chapter of heir coupe relationship to look like.
3% of the couples and individuals who came to Accord in 2025 came when they were between 41-50 years together
No Perfect Time: Now is always a good time to support your couple relationship
There’s no perfect time for couple therapy. Sometimes the best moment is when you notice the same argument recycling again, the distance growing—or simply feel that your relationship deserves a little attention.
You don’t have to wait for a crisis. Sometimes a much-needed conversation is where the next stage begins
